Walking

Ramblers in the Wye ValleyCastell Dinas in the Black MountainsThe variety and beauty of the terrain makes this brilliant walking country for all abilities from gentle woodland nature trails and riverside walks to interesting circular pub hikes and energetic high mountain expeditions.

In addition to our own circular walks, the following links give details of various guided and self-guided walks.

  • Leaping Stiles - Provides details of local walks with downloadable maps.
  • The Wye Valley Walk - 136 mile long distance trail from Chepstow, in Monmouthshire, past Trericket Mill to the source of the River Wye at Plynlimon high in the Cambrian Mountains. Incorporate parts of the trail into a circular walk or utilise our public bus service to start your walk or return to the Mill. 5 yards
  • Brecon Beacons National Park - The National Park organise a range of walks and events. 8 - 20 miles
  • Brecon Beacons Park Society - Organise more energetic guided walks for experienced walkers, £2 donation requested from non-members. 8 - 20 miles
  • The Ramblers Association (Four Wells Group) - Organise walks every other Saturday. 0 - 20 miles

  • Walking World - Subscription website where local walking routes can be downloaded.
  • Geocaching - If your kids find walks a bit pointless, introduce them to geocaching, a treasure hunting game played throughout the world by old and young adventure seekers. There are several caches hidden in the vicinity.

  • Drover Holidays - Will deliver rental bikes to Trericket Mill and suggest routes.
  • Lon Las Cymru - the Welsh National Cycle Route - The Sustrans 276 mile way-marked cycle route running from Anglesey in the north to Cardiff or Chepstow in the south, runs along the Wye Valley just over the river from Trericket Mill. You cross the river via Llanstephan suspension bridge, opposite the mill. 500 yards

  • Elan Valley - Gentle cycling on the 8 mile Elan Valley Trail around the Victorian reservoirs. Local bike hire available. 18 miles
  • Builth Wells Cycles - Mountain bike hire and guided routes. Can deliver bikes to Trericket Mill.

Water Activities

Caoeing the River Wye from GlasburyRiver Wye near Trericket Mill In summer it is hard to beat a half or full day paddling down the River Wye in a kayak or Canadian canoe; most of the operators will collect you at your destination and bring you back to your starting point. In winter, serious canoeists take to the Upper Wye for kayaking and white water rafting. Sailing dinghies and rowing boats can be rented on LLangors Lake (the largest natural lake in Wales), and narrow boat trips are available on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Caving, Climbing & Abseiling

Caving with Black Mountains ActivitiesThe Brecon Beacons is well suited for climbing and caving. The limescale caves under the LLangattock escarpment (15 miles) near Crickhowell are some of the longest in Britain.

Wildlife and Nature

  • The Red Kite Feeding Station - See the Red Kites fed every afternoon at Gigrin Farm, Rhayader. 16 miles
  • Wild Watch In Powys - Come and see badgers and otters, red kites, wild flowers, and more. Guided walks led by knowledgeable wardens.
  • Elan Valley - Special area of conservation incorporating mountains and reservoirs with nature trails and regular organised events. 18 miles
  • Brecknock Wildlife Trust and Radnorshire Wildlife Trust - Both have a number of nature reserves and organise a programme of field events covering a range of interests. 2 - 20 miles
  • Red Kite Feeding Station - Another red kite feeding station on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. 35 miles
